Embraer has secured a significant certification win for its newest business jet, with the Phenom 300EV receiving approval from aviation authorities in Brazil, the United States and Europe.
The aircraft has now been certified by Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). More importantly, the Phenom 300EV becomes the first light jet certified with Garmin Emergency Autoland, putting one of the aviation industry’s most talked-about safety technologies into a new-generation aircraft in the category.
The certification comes shortly after Embraer introduced the Phenom 300EV in July. The company has positioned the aircraft as the latest evolution of its popular Phenom 300 family, adding new avionics, flight-control technology and cabin improvements without moving away from the performance that has made the jet a major player in the light business jet market.
For Embraer, however, emergency autoland is likely to be the feature that gets the most attention.
Emergency autoland changes the safety equation
Garmin Emergency Autoland is designed for an unlikely but serious situation: the pilot becomes unable to fly the aircraft.
If activated, the system can take over the aircraft and manage the flight through an automated landing. It is a very different proposition from a conventional autopilot, which is primarily intended to assist the pilot with routine flight operations.
The idea behind emergency autoland is straightforward. If the person at the controls can no longer operate the aircraft, the aircraft itself has the ability to take the next steps.
That matters particularly in the light-jet market, where aircraft are often operated by a single pilot. The technology does not remove the need for a trained pilot, nor is it intended to replace normal cockpit decision-making. Instead, it provides an additional safety layer for an extreme situation.
The Phenom 300EV is now the largest business jet equipped with Garmin Emergency Autoland, according to Embraer.
Having the system certified by ANAC, the FAA and EASA is also important. These three approvals give the aircraft a clear regulatory pathway into some of the world’s biggest business aviation markets.
Embraer adds more automation to the cockpit
Emergency autoland is not the only major technology change on the Phenom 300EV.
Embraer has developed a Multi-Purpose Electronic Controller, or MEC, for the aircraft. The system controls several electronically operated functions, including the autobrake and rudder-by-wire systems.
The use of electronic control is intended to make the aircraft easier to manage while reducing the workload placed on pilots. It can also simplify maintenance, which could be just as important to operators as the technology’s effect inside the cockpit.
The aircraft also comes with an upgraded Garmin G3000 avionics suite. Embraer has added features aimed at improving situational awareness and reducing the amount of information pilots have to process manually.
Among the technology included on the aircraft are runway occupancy awareness, synthetic vision guidance, runway overrun awareness and alerting, Emergency Descent Mode and autothrottle.
There is a clear theme running through these additions. Embraer is not simply adding more screens or electronic functions. The company is trying to make the aircraft easier to operate while giving pilots more tools when conditions become demanding.
The Phenom 300EV still has speed on its side
Despite all the attention around its safety technology, the Phenom 300EV remains a performance-focused business jet.
Embraer lists a maximum range of 2,055 nautical miles, allowing the aircraft to connect a wide range of regional and international city pairs without the size and operating requirements of a larger business jet.
The aircraft can reach Mach 0.80, while its maximum operating altitude is 45,000 feet. Embraer also lists a high-speed cruise of 464 knots.
Its published takeoff distance is 3,209 feet under the company’s stated baseline conditions. That gives operators greater flexibility when selecting airports, particularly for missions where access to smaller airports is one of the reasons for choosing a light jet in the first place.
The aircraft has a maximum payload of 3,066 pounds, while its maximum payload with full fuel is listed at 1,485 pounds.
Those figures help explain why the Phenom 300 platform has become such an important aircraft for Embraer. Owners are getting a relatively compact jet without having to give up the speed and range associated with larger aircraft.
Cabin upgrades go beyond the cockpit
The changes are not limited to the flight deck.
Embraer has also worked on the passenger side of the aircraft, with the Phenom 300EV offering a more refined cabin and improved connectivity.
The jet can accommodate up to 10 passengers, depending on the configuration, and provides 84 cubic feet of total baggage capacity.
At 45,000 feet, the cabin altitude is listed at 6,600 feet. Large windows are designed to bring more natural light into the cabin, while the interior is built around the kind of comfort and connectivity that private jet customers increasingly expect.
The aircraft is also planned to feature LEO connectivity, allowing passengers to remain connected while travelling.
Other details include a refreshment center and a vacuum lavatory designed to eliminate odors. An airstair influenced by Embraer’s larger business jets is another small but noticeable change.
These may not attract the same attention as emergency autoland, but they are important when the aircraft is being sold as an all-around business aviation platform rather than simply a fast way to travel.
Why this certification matters for Embraer
The Phenom 300 family has already established itself as one of the strongest products in its segment. Embraer says the Phenom 300 has been the world’s best-selling light jet for 14 consecutive years.
The Phenom 300EV now gives the company another way to differentiate the aircraft.
Performance is still a major part of the pitch, but emergency autoland gives prospective owners something that is harder for competitors to match. Safety technology can be particularly persuasive in private aviation, where aircraft may be operated by one pilot carrying family members, executives or other passengers.
The triple certification also removes a major hurdle ahead of the aircraft’s planned entry into service.
Embraer expects deliveries of the Phenom 300EV to begin in 2028.
By that point, the company will be hoping that the aircraft’s combination of performance, automation and comfort will appeal to existing Phenom customers as well as buyers considering their first light jet.
Could emergency autoland become a new expectation?
The bigger story may extend beyond the Phenom 300EV.
Emergency autoland has the potential to change what customers expect from business aircraft. Once a technology capable of taking over and landing an aircraft during pilot incapacitation becomes available on a light jet, it becomes easier to imagine customers asking why similar capabilities are not available elsewhere.
That does not mean every aircraft will suddenly become capable of flying itself from departure to destination. Pilots remain central to aviation, and automated systems still operate within carefully defined limits.
But the role of automation is changing.
Systems that once helped pilots with individual tasks are increasingly capable of handling much more complicated sequences when necessary. The Phenom 300EV is a good example of that shift.
For passengers, the attraction is obvious. In an emergency, having another layer between a serious cockpit problem and a potentially disastrous outcome could make a meaningful difference.
For Embraer, meanwhile, the certification gives the Phenom 300EV a strong talking point in an already competitive market.
A new chapter for the Phenom 300
The Phenom 300EV is not a clean-sheet aircraft. It builds on a platform that Embraer has spent years refining.
That may actually be one of its biggest strengths.
The company has taken a proven light-jet design and added technology that addresses some of the most important issues in modern business aviation: pilot workload, situational awareness, connectivity, operating efficiency and emergency preparedness.
The result is an aircraft that still offers the speed and range buyers expect from a Phenom 300, but with a much stronger emphasis on automation.
The latest certifications from ANAC, the FAA and EASA mean that the aircraft has now cleared a crucial regulatory milestone. With deliveries scheduled for 2028, attention will turn to how operators respond to the new technology once the first aircraft begin entering service.
For now, though, the Phenom 300EV has already achieved something notable. It has brought Garmin Emergency Autoland into the certified light-jet market, potentially giving passengers one more reason to feel confident when they step aboard.
And that could prove to be one of the most important developments in the Phenom 300’s long-running success story.
