Maeve Aerospace Collapse Ends Hybrid Aircraft Dream
The bankruptcy of Dutch aircraft developer Maeve Aerospace has brought an end to a four-year effort to create a next-generation hybrid-electric regional aircraft, marking another setback for the emerging sustainable aviation sector.
Court filings in the Netherlands confirm that Maeve Aerospace and its parent organization, Green Transition Alliance, were declared bankrupt on May 28. Dutch insolvency specialist Karlijn van Vliet of Cees Advocaten has been appointed trustee to oversee the proceedings.
While no official explanation has been provided for the collapse, Dutch financial media reports suggest that a critical funding round intended to raise approximately €20 million ($23 million) failed to materialize. Without the fresh capital needed to continue development, the company appears to have run out of options despite attracting significant industry attention and securing strategic partnerships.
The bankruptcy comes less than a year after regional airline SkyWest Airlines invested in the company and committed to becoming the launch customer for its proposed aircraft.
Ambitious Beginnings in Electric Aviation
Maeve Aerospace’s story began in early 2022 under a different name: Venturi Aviation.
Founded by entrepreneurs Jan-Willem Heinen and Joost Dieben, the startup entered the aerospace market with an ambitious vision for a fully electric regional aircraft. Unlike many aviation founders, the pair came from mobility and transportation backgrounds rather than traditional aerospace engineering, bringing a fresh but unconventional perspective to aircraft development.
Their initial concept, known as the Echelon 01, targeted the growing demand for sustainable regional air travel. The aircraft was designed to accommodate 44 passengers and operate routes of up to 300 nautical miles (550 kilometers), a range suitable for many short-haul European and North American regional markets.
The all-electric aircraft relied on eight electric motors, each generating roughly 1.2 megawatts of power. At the time, the company projected entry into commercial service by 2030.
The concept generated interest because it aligned with broader aviation industry efforts to reduce carbon emissions and meet increasingly stringent environmental targets.
Rebranding and Constant Redesigns
Only months after unveiling its original concept, Venturi Aviation underwent a major transformation.
The company rebranded as Maeve Aerospace during 2022 and simultaneously revealed substantial changes to its aircraft design. The Echelon 01 evolved into the Maeve 01, featuring six more powerful electric motors rated at approximately 1.5 megawatts each.
The rebranding coincided with the announcement of an initial €3.4 million investment from private backers. Later that year, Maeve also secured support from the European Innovation Council, providing additional credibility to its development plans.
However, frequent design changes soon became a defining feature of the company’s journey.
By mid-2023, Maeve unveiled yet another version of its aircraft. The updated Maeve 01 reflected the influence of newly appointed Chief Technology Officer Martin Nusseler, a veteran aerospace engineer with experience at Airbus and Deutsche Aircraft.
The revised aircraft featured a significantly different architecture, including an elliptical fuselage, a reduced wingspan, and four electric propulsion units rather than six. The company also dramatically reduced the aircraft’s projected maximum takeoff weight from more than 45 metric tons to just 25.9 metric tons.
These revisions were intended to improve efficiency and enhance the aircraft’s commercial viability. Yet they also highlighted the engineering challenges associated with developing a viable electric aircraft capable of meeting airline requirements.
Shift From Electric to Hybrid Power
Perhaps the most significant turning point came at the end of 2023.
Recognizing the limitations of battery technology and the challenges associated with all-electric flight, Maeve pivoted toward hybrid-electric propulsion.
The company replaced the Maeve 01 concept with the larger M80, an 80-seat regional aircraft that combined electric propulsion with conventional energy sources. The transition reflected a growing consensus across the aerospace sector that hybrid systems may represent a more realistic pathway toward lower-emission aviation in the near term.
The strategic shift occurred shortly after co-founder Joost Dieben departed the company, adding further uncertainty during a critical phase of development.
For many observers, the move underscored a broader industry reality: while electric aviation holds enormous promise, current battery technology remains insufficient for larger commercial aircraft operating economically viable routes.
The Emergence of the Maeve Jet
The redesign process did not stop there.
By 2025, Maeve had unveiled yet another concept, known as the Maeve Jet. The aircraft represented a dramatic departure from earlier configurations and featured a hybrid-electric propulsion system using rear-mounted open-rotor engines.
The company envisioned the aircraft entering service in 2033, targeting airlines seeking lower emissions and improved fuel efficiency in regional operations.
The Maeve Jet attracted attention from several major aviation stakeholders.
Among those expressing interest were Delta Air Lines, Japan Airlines, and SkyWest Airlines. SkyWest’s involvement proved especially significant when the U.S. regional airline invested directly in Maeve during September 2025 and agreed to serve as launch customer for the proposed aircraft.
For a startup aircraft manufacturer, securing both financial support and a launch commitment from a major regional carrier represented a substantial achievement.
Yet even those endorsements ultimately could not overcome the financial realities of aircraft development.
Strong Partnerships Could Not Prevent Failure
Throughout its existence, Maeve worked to establish relationships with respected aerospace suppliers and technology providers.
Its industrial partner network included RTX subsidiaries Pratt & Whitney Canada and Collins Aerospace, both major players in aircraft propulsion and systems integration.
The company also partnered with Montreal-based MHI RJ Aviation Group (MHIRJ), a recognized specialist in regional aircraft programs.
These partnerships provided technical expertise and industry validation. Nevertheless, developing an entirely new aircraft remains one of the most capital-intensive challenges in aerospace.
Industry analysts frequently note that bringing a clean-sheet aircraft program to market can require hundreds of millions—or even billions—of dollars before certification and entry into service.
For startups pursuing novel propulsion technologies, the financial hurdles can be even greater due to regulatory uncertainty, technology maturation requirements, and extended development timelines.
Another Warning for Sustainable Aviation Startups
Maeve Aerospace’s downfall reflects broader challenges facing the electric and hybrid-electric aviation sector.
Over the past several years, numerous startups have emerged with ambitious plans to revolutionize regional air travel through sustainable propulsion technologies. However, many have encountered difficulties securing the massive capital investments necessary to move from concept studies to certified commercial aircraft.
The failure of Maeve does not diminish growing industry interest in sustainable aviation. Airlines, manufacturers, governments, and investors continue to pursue lower-emission technologies as pressure mounts to reduce aviation’s environmental footprint.
However, the company’s bankruptcy serves as a reminder that innovation alone is not enough. Long-term financing, technological maturity, certification expertise, and stable program management remain essential ingredients for success.
Meanwhile, former Maeve CTO Martin Nusseler has already moved on to a new role as Vice President of Aircraft and New Programme Development at MHI RJ Aviation Group. His transition highlights how the expertise developed within startup ventures often continues to influence future aerospace programs, even when individual companies fail.
For Maeve Aerospace, however, the journey has come to an end—closing the chapter on a startup that repeatedly reinvented its vision but ultimately could not secure the financial runway needed to reach takeoff.
