ZeroAvia Founder Exits as Hydrogen Plans Face Delays

The leadership of hydrogen-powered aviation developer ZeroAvia is undergoing a significant transition after founder and chief executive Val Miftakhov stepped down from his role, marking the end of an era for one of the industry’s most closely watched clean aviation startups.

The company confirmed that Miftakhov officially left the CEO position on 26 May, following a period of major operational restructuring that included workforce reductions in both the United States and the United Kingdom, along with revised timelines for its flagship hydrogen-electric propulsion programs.

While Miftakhov is departing from day-to-day management, he will continue to play a role in the company’s future. ZeroAvia stated that he will remain a member of its board of directors, contributing to long-term strategic decisions and supporting the company’s broader mission of decarbonizing air transport.

The announcement comes at a critical stage for ZeroAvia, which has spent years positioning itself at the forefront of hydrogen-powered aviation technology. The company is pursuing fuel-cell-based propulsion systems that aim to replace conventional aircraft engines and significantly reduce carbon emissions from regional and commercial aviation.

Leadership Change During a Defining Period

In the wake of Miftakhov’s departure, executive chair Christine Ourmières-Widener will assume responsibility for overseeing the company’s daily operations on an interim basis. The board has begun searching for a permanent successor who will guide ZeroAvia through its next phase of development and certification.

Company representatives praised Miftakhov’s contribution in building ZeroAvia from an early-stage concept into one of the most recognizable names in sustainable aviation technology. The board expressed confidence that the transition would be smooth and emphasized its belief that the company remains on a positive long-term trajectory despite recent challenges.

For his part, Miftakhov described his time leading the company as a defining professional experience. He highlighted the progress made by the organization since its founding in 2018 and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting ZeroAvia’s mission through his continued involvement as a board member.

His departure, however, arrives against the backdrop of significant financial and operational pressures that have tested the company’s resilience over the past two years.

Workforce Reductions Reflect Funding Pressures

Like many emerging aerospace technology firms, ZeroAvia has faced the difficult balance between ambitious engineering goals and the substantial capital required to achieve them.

During 2024, the company implemented several rounds of layoffs that affected operations across its international footprint. In the United States, reductions impacted employees at the company’s Propulsion Center of Excellence in Everett, Washington, a key site for the development of its hydrogen-electric propulsion systems.

Similar restructuring efforts occurred in the United Kingdom, where ZeroAvia operates facilities in Sandwich, Kent, and Kemble, Gloucestershire. The departures reportedly included personnel across multiple disciplines, ranging from airworthiness certification specialists and engineering teams to marketing, communications, research, and development staff.

Industry reports indicated that the cumulative reductions amounted to roughly half of the company’s workforce. ZeroAvia characterized the measures as part of a broader effort to conserve cash while continuing to advance critical technology programs.

Such moves underscore the broader challenges facing the sustainable aviation sector, where development cycles are lengthy, certification requirements are rigorous, and funding demands remain exceptionally high.

Hydrogen Propulsion Remains the Core Focus

Despite leadership changes and workforce restructuring, ZeroAvia continues to push forward with its hydrogen-electric propulsion roadmap.

The company’s most advanced project is the ZA600 powertrain, a 600kW hydrogen fuel-cell propulsion system initially intended for a modified Cessna Caravan. The technology combines hydrogen fuel cells with electric motors to generate propulsion without producing carbon dioxide emissions during flight operations.

The ZA600 has become one of the most closely followed programs in the emerging hydrogen aviation market because it represents a potential pathway for regional aircraft operators seeking alternatives to conventional fossil-fuel-powered engines.

However, certification timelines have shifted repeatedly as technical, regulatory, and financial realities have evolved.

Until recently, ZeroAvia was targeting certification of the complete ZA600 system in 2027. That schedule already reflected delays compared with earlier projections announced by the company.

Revised Certification Strategy Extends Timelines

At the beginning of the year, ZeroAvia adjusted its development strategy in a move aimed at simplifying the certification process and managing resources more effectively.

Rather than seeking approval for the entire ZA600 propulsion package by 2027, the company announced plans to focus first on certifying the fuel-cell power-generation component of the system.

This revised approach means certification of the full ZA600 powertrain is now expected to occur between one and two years later than previously anticipated, depending on future funding availability and development progress.

The company’s larger ZA2000 propulsion system has also been affected by the revised timeline. Designed to deliver approximately 2MW of power for larger aircraft applications, the ZA2000 is viewed as a crucial element in ZeroAvia’s longer-term ambitions to expand hydrogen-electric technology into larger regional and commercial aircraft segments.

Certification targets for the ZA2000 have similarly been pushed back by an estimated 12 to 24 months.

While these delays may disappoint some industry observers, they also reflect the realities of bringing entirely new propulsion technologies through regulatory approval processes that were originally designed around conventional turbine engines.

Regulatory Progress Continues

Despite the setbacks, ZeroAvia has continued to make progress with aviation regulators.

A notable milestone came in March when the US Federal Aviation Administration issued special conditions for the company’s ZA601 propulsion system.

Special conditions are developed when existing certification regulations do not fully address a novel technology. They establish the safety and airworthiness standards that a product must satisfy before receiving regulatory approval.

The FAA’s action represents an important step toward defining the certification pathway for hydrogen-electric propulsion technology in the United States. For ZeroAvia, it provides greater clarity regarding the regulatory requirements necessary to bring its systems into commercial service.

Although certification remains a lengthy process, the establishment of these standards signals increasing engagement between regulators and developers of next-generation propulsion systems.

A Pivotal Moment for ZeroAvia

The departure of Val Miftakhov closes an important chapter in ZeroAvia’s history. Under his leadership, the company emerged as one of the most prominent advocates of hydrogen-powered flight, attracting investors, industry partners, and regulatory attention while advancing technologies that could play a role in aviation’s long-term decarbonization efforts.

Yet the company now faces the challenge of maintaining momentum amid tighter financial conditions, evolving certification strategies, and increasing competition within the sustainable aviation sector.

With Christine Ourmières-Widener guiding operations during the transition and a search underway for a new chief executive, ZeroAvia enters a period that could define its future. The next few years will determine whether the company can successfully convert its technological promise into certified, commercially viable propulsion systems capable of reshaping regional air transport.
