BermudAir has taken a major step in shaping its long-term future by placing its first-ever aircraft order with Airbus, committing to 10 A220-300 aircraft that will significantly expand the carrier’s reach across North America and the Caribbean.
The agreement, unveiled during the Farnborough International Airshow, represents a defining milestone for the Bermuda-based airline, which only launched scheduled passenger operations in 2023. Beyond introducing a new aircraft type, the order establishes BermudAir as Airbus’ newest commercial customer and signals the airline’s ambitions to evolve into a larger narrowbody operator capable of serving a broader network.
The aircraft order had quietly appeared in Airbus’ order book in March 2026 under an undisclosed customer. Airbus has now officially confirmed BermudAir as the buyer, bringing another new operator into the growing A220 family.
BermudAir Begins a New Chapter with Airbus
Since its launch less than three years ago, BermudAir has steadily built its network using Embraer E175 and E190 regional jets. Those aircraft enabled the airline to establish connections between Bermuda and major cities along the U.S. East Coast while also supporting regional Caribbean services through its AnguillAir brand.
While the Embraer fleet played a critical role in helping the startup airline establish itself, BermudAir has always viewed larger next-generation aircraft as the foundation of its long-term fleet strategy.
The introduction of the Airbus A220-300 provides exactly that platform.
Configured with 135 seats in a three-class cabin, including a premium section, the aircraft will offer considerably more capacity than BermudAir’s current regional jets while maintaining the operational flexibility needed to serve Bermuda’s unique market.
Deliveries are expected to begin within the next 18 months and continue into the early 2030s, allowing the airline to gradually integrate the aircraft while expanding its network in a measured and sustainable manner.
Airbus A220 to Power Future Growth
Founder and Chief Executive Officer Adam Scott described the Airbus A220 as the ideal aircraft to support BermudAir’s next stage of development.
According to Scott, the airline evaluated several aircraft before selecting the A220 based on its combination of range, fuel efficiency, operating economics and performance at airports with operational constraints. Passenger comfort also played an important role in the decision-making process.
“The A220 is the ideal aircraft to support the next phase of BermudAir’s growth,” Scott said during the announcement, highlighting the aircraft’s ability to open new markets while delivering an enhanced onboard experience.
With a range of approximately 3,600 nautical miles, the Airbus A220-300 gives BermudAir the flexibility to launch nonstop services well beyond its existing network.
The aircraft will allow the airline to explore destinations deeper into North America, including cities in the U.S. Midwest and Central regions that were previously beyond the practical reach of its Embraer fleet. At the same time, it will strengthen connectivity throughout the Caribbean while providing greater scheduling flexibility across existing routes.
Greater Capacity Meets Rising Passenger Demand
Several of BermudAir’s current routes have experienced strong passenger demand since the airline’s launch, with flights regularly operating at high load factors.
The Airbus A220 provides an immediate solution by increasing available seating without sacrificing efficiency.
Its 135-seat configuration strikes a balance between regional flexibility and narrowbody capacity, enabling BermudAir to accommodate more passengers while maintaining frequency on key routes.
The three-class layout also reflects the airline’s focus on premium travel. By including a dedicated premium cabin alongside economy seating, BermudAir aims to attract higher-yield business and leisure travellers while improving the overall passenger experience.
This approach supports both customer satisfaction and stronger revenue generation as the airline continues to mature.
Transition Away from an Embraer-Only Fleet
Although BermudAir will continue operating its Embraer aircraft during the transition period, the Airbus A220 is expected to gradually become the airline’s primary fleet type over the coming years.
As additional A220s arrive, the newer aircraft will increasingly replace the smaller regional jets on higher-demand routes, creating greater fleet commonality and simplifying operations.
Operating a more standardized fleet offers several long-term advantages, including reduced maintenance complexity, streamlined pilot training and improved operational efficiency.
The phased delivery schedule provides BermudAir with sufficient time to adapt to the new aircraft while aligning fleet growth with market demand.
Expansion Plans Extend Beyond the Initial Order
The current agreement covers ten Airbus A220-300 aircraft, but BermudAir has already indicated that it views this as only the beginning of a much larger fleet strategy.
The airline has outlined ambitions to eventually operate approximately 20 A220 aircraft by the early 2030s, depending on market conditions and the success of its ongoing expansion plans.
That long-term vision reflects BermudAir’s confidence in the aircraft as the backbone of its future operations.

Airbus Strengthens the A220 Programme
For Airbus, the BermudAir agreement adds another important customer to the A220 programme, which continues to build momentum worldwide.
The A220 family has now accumulated more than 1,100 firm orders globally, with over 500 aircraft already delivered to airlines across multiple continents.
The programme continues to attract airlines seeking an aircraft that combines lower operating costs with impressive range and strong passenger appeal.
The addition of BermudAir also introduces the A220 to another important geographic market in the Atlantic and Caribbean region, where airlines increasingly require fuel-efficient aircraft capable of serving both short- and medium-haul routes.
As Airbus works toward increasing A220 production, securing new operators remains an important part of strengthening the programme’s long-term outlook.
