For the first time in more than 20 years, EgyptAir has re-established direct air service between Cairo and Los Angeles, signaling a significant step in the carrier’s ongoing international expansion strategy. The relaunch of flights to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which officially resumed on May 23, reconnects Egypt’s national airline with one of the largest aviation markets in the United States and reinforces its ambitions to strengthen links between North Africa and North America.
The return to Los Angeles comes as EgyptAir continues to modernize its long-haul operations and expand its global footprint. Supported by the introduction of the Airbus A350-900 into its fleet, the airline is positioning itself to compete more effectively on long-distance routes while offering passengers improved comfort, efficiency, and connectivity.
EgyptAir Reconnects Cairo and Los Angeles
Los Angeles has long been viewed as a strategically important destination for EgyptAir. The airline previously served the California market until 2001, when flights operated via New York before continuing to Southern California. The newly launched service now offers a nonstop connection between Cairo International Airport (CAI) and Los Angeles International Airport, eliminating the need for intermediate stops and significantly reducing travel complexity.
The route forms part of EgyptAir’s broader effort to enhance access between Egypt and key U.S. cities. By restoring service to Los Angeles, the carrier gains access to one of the largest metropolitan regions in North America, home to substantial Middle Eastern, North African, and international communities.
Beyond serving travelers flying directly between Egypt and California, the route also strengthens Cairo’s role as a connecting hub. Airbus A350-900 Takes Center Stage
The new Los Angeles service is operated by the Airbus A350-900, a cornerstone of EgyptAir’s fleet modernization program. The aircraft offers enhanced fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and improved passenger amenities compared to previous-generation widebody aircraft.
Configured with 330 seats, the A350-900 features 30 seats in Business Class and 300 seats in Economy Class. The aircraft’s advanced cabin environment, quieter interior, and long-range capabilities make it particularly well suited for ultra-long-haul routes such as Cairo-Los Angeles.
The deployment of the A350 reflects EgyptAir’s intention to improve operational efficiency while delivering a more competitive onboard experience. Three Weekly Flights Connect Egypt and California
EgyptAir’s Los Angeles service operates three times per week, providing regular connectivity between the two cities.
Flights depart Cairo on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays as flight MS983. The service leaves Cairo at approximately 8:30 a.m. and arrives in Los Angeles at around 1:20 p.m. local time after a journey lasting roughly 14 hours and 50 minutes.
The westbound daytime schedule is designed to provide passengers with convenient arrival times in Southern California, enabling easy onward connections or same-day access to destinations throughout the region.
Return flights operate as MS984, departing Los Angeles at approximately 5:25 p.m. local time. The overnight eastbound service arrives in Cairo the following day at around 5:10 p.m. after a flight time of approximately 13 hours and 45 minutes.
The inaugural arrival was welcomed enthusiastically at Los Angeles International Airport, highlighting the significance of the route’s return after such a lengthy absence.
Expanding EgyptAir’s Presence in the United States
The relaunch of Los Angeles flights is only one component of EgyptAir’s growing North American strategy. Earlier this year, the airline announced plans to expand its U.S. operations beyond its existing gateways at Newark Liberty International Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport.
Both destinations have served as important pillars of EgyptAir’s American network for several years, providing direct access to major population centers on the East Coast.
By adding Los Angeles and Chicago, EgyptAir significantly broadens its geographic reach within the United States. The expansion enables the carrier to tap into new passenger markets while increasing awareness of Egypt as both a tourism destination and a business hub.

Chicago Joins the Network in June
EgyptAir’s U.S. growth story will continue with the launch of nonstop flights between Cairo and Chicago O’Hare International Airport beginning June 21.
The route will also operate three times weekly using the Airbus A350-900. Flights will depart Cairo as MS947 on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.
Scheduled to leave Cairo shortly after midnight, the service will arrive in Chicago early in the morning, offering travelers convenient access to one of the Midwest’s most important transportation and business centers.
Chicago represents another key market with strong demand potential, particularly among travelers visiting friends and relatives, business passengers, and tourists seeking direct access between Egypt and the American Midwest.
The addition of Chicago complements EgyptAir’s existing U.S. destinations and creates a more balanced network that spans the East Coast, Midwest, and West Coast.
Growing Competition on Long-Haul International Routes
With the return to Los Angeles, EgyptAir joins a growing group of airlines connecting Southern California with destinations across the Middle East, North Africa, and Western Asia. The airport already hosts nonstop services from several major carriers serving cities such as Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, Jeddah, Tel Aviv, and Casablanca.
